The High Desert Follies is a Taos, New Mexico–based live comedy and variety company bringing original, offbeat, and distinctly Southwestern entertainment to the stage.

Blending sketch comedy, storytelling, monologues, music, satire, and theatrical absurdity, The High Desert Follies celebrates the strange, wonderful, and wonderfully strange people and experiences that make life in the high desert unique.

Our shows feature original material performed by local actors, writers, musicians, and artists, with comedy that ranges from clever and heartfelt to irreverent and delightfully ridiculous. No two performances are quite the same, but audiences can always expect an evening filled with laughter, surprises, and a healthy dose of Taos weirdness.

At its heart, The High Desert Follies is about community—creating a place where local performers can take chances, new work can find an audience, and people can come together and laugh.

Making Rain-Themed Costumes, Props & Decor in Gear Up for the September 26 Walking Parade @ Rio Fernando Park

ABOUT EVENT
RAIN ON OUR PARADE is a communal celebration in gratitude for the live-giving rains and waterways that sustain us. Part party and part prayer/ritual, this 0.5-mile walking parade — full of music, games, storytelling, land connection, and many chances to dance — brings folx of all backgrounds together at the Taos Land Trust’s Rio Fernando Wetlands Park (TAOS, NM) on Saturday afternoon, September 26.

The two-hour event will feature an opening blessing, a brass band to “rain dance” us along, plus small performances at different stops along the way. We will end with a “give back” to TLT, an act of community service in gratitude for the space, such as weeding thistles or painting the structure around the horno.

With weekly community costuming craft nights at Inspire Roots Schoolhouse all through September leading up to the event, this is truly a communal coming-together in creativity and joy as a way to honor the water that connects us all.

Prospero, Duke of Milan, also a skilled magician, is kidnapped by his scheming brother Antonio and set to sea in a boat with his little daughter Miranda. He washes ashore a magical isle inhabited by spirits of the air including Ariel, his special love, and lower spirits such as Caliban. He brings all under his power and dispells the witch Sycroax. As the play opens, years have passed, Miranda has grown into a beauty, and he longs to return to Milan. How Prospero conjures his return Shakespeare reveals in this: His final work, a fascinating, extraordinary play.

Taos Children's Theatre invokes the magic of the isle with bands of Fairies, joined by Goddesses, shadow puppetry, and shipwrecked royal beings.

Midsummer Magic: A Musical Celebration presents an evening of music fit for the season of heat and light. Interactive rehearsals are an open invitation for community members and artists to observe dancers in rehearsal. 

Much as a painter would have an open studio where the public could walk in and watch them paint, we invite you into the studio to watch dancers create new movement, and to respond to what you observe with your own art. 

We will provide art supplies for community members to use. No prior art experience is necessary and participation is art-making is completely optional.

Professional artists are invited to bring pencils and sketchbooks ONLY into the theater at the Wildflower. If you have other mediums you'd like to work with during the rehearsal time, we invite you to attend our interactive rehearsals at the Harwood Museum on June 23rd & 24th. TOI is proud to present Michael Ching’s thought-provoking and powerful opera, Remove Shoes Before Entering, on June 4. The piece will be semi-staged and performed by all 22 of TOI’s Young Artists, with Ching on the piano.
