Fairy Jazz Productions in conjunction with the Wildflower Playhouse continues its musical celebration of the seasons with its sixth show:
Midsummer Magic: A Musical Celebration
Featuring
The Second Wind Endeavor
With opening act, Anam Cara
Midsummer Magic: A Musical Celebration presents an evening of music to prepare the heart and mind for the fullness of summer’s heat and light. In contrasting styles, our two bands set the magic in motion, with music ranging from meditative airs to rousing rock anthems, all offered with an aim to inspire as well as entertain. Anam Cara begins the concert with its spirited interpretation of Celtic dance tunes and original music drawing on many folk traditions, followed by our featured band, The Second Wind Endeavor, with its unique weave of folk and rock music, a moving tapestry of sound that engages body and soul.
Anam Cara is a longstanding folk favorite in the Taos area, with musicians also known for their solo and duo work as well as participation in such projects as the Fairy Jazz Project and the Neighbors. The group includes Julie Hawley on Celtic harp and lead vocals, Jimmie Killingsworth on mandolin, bouzouki, and banjo, Chris Knox on flute, whistles, and concertina, and our latest addition, the celebrated touring and recording artist Michael Mandrell on guitar. In this show, Anam Cara features our most daring arrangements of jigs, reels, and ballads as well as extensions of the tradition in original instrumental and vocal numbers. The aim is to set the mood with a quiet intensity.
The Second Wind Endeavor, our featured act, will take us to the next stage of heat and light with its poetic lyrics set in a densely rhythmic and sometimes wild interplay of instruments: Michael Virga on electric guitar and vocals, Rose Dragoo on viola and vocals, Robert Quijano on bass, and Evan Sanchez on drums. Though quite different in style, SWE shares with Anam Cara a moody dreaminess that can make you feel as if you’re on the verge of drifting into a different realm, a place of fairies or maybe aliens! We think it will be a rare treat to enjoy the music of SWE in the intimate atmosphere of the Wildflower Playhouse.
To add to the undeniable quality of the Wildflower as a listening room, sound will be provided by the legendary Peter Oviatt of Moonflower Sounds.
