Writing Workshop with José Garcia Davis

José Garcia Davis is an accomplished theater, film, video and visual artist with 40 years of professional experience. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Latina Dance Project (LDP). He co-created and performed in LDP’s critically acclaimed touring production SLUMBER OF REASON and was the director of LDP’s touring production COYOLXAUHQUI REMEMBERS. He created 24 short videos for both of LDP’s productions and he was commissioned to create video for the new production of  2 NOGALES by playwright Hugo Salcedo, which premiered in Tucson in May, 2024. Garcia Davis is pleased to be a new board member of the Joshua Tree Foundation for Arts & Ecology and one of the producers of ¡Hay Festival!, an arts festival in Joshua Tree, California, where his new short film CHICANO MOSES VS. LA BRUJA DE LANDERS will premiere in November, which he created with artist Joe Alvarez.

Since 1985, Garcia Davis has created and collaborated on many original stage productions including dance, opera, and one and two-person shows. He has performed in many productions in film, theater, zarzuela and opera throughout the USA and in China, Europe, Mexico, Canada and South America. TIME MAGAZINE included his touring show TITO on their list of the most important works of Latino Theater of the decade of the 1980’s. Garcia Davis directed and taught theater to educators and students in China as Artistic Director of Theater for Environmental Awareness.  He has been Artistic Director of a number of theater companies in New Mexico and California.  As playwright, director and performer, Garcia Davis has been a guest artist for several  companies around the country. He has been Artist-in-Residence for LA Theatre Works, Homeland Cultural Center and the NM Arts Division, and has been an Acting Coach Mentor for Scholastic, Inc. He is a protégé of the late great acting coach Lawrence Parke and has taught acting since 1991. In 1997 Garcia Davis won the Latino Media Institute’s First Annual Screenwriting Competition for his screenplay CHECKPOINT.
