Gallery Opening High Desert Tea Party Tera Muskrat

  • Wildflower Playhouse 1339 Paseo Del Pueblo Sur Taos, NM, 87571 United States (map)

Tera Muskrat is a self-taught Painter who wants you to see ordinary people in the cultural landscape of Northern New Mexico as deeply poetic, fabulous figures of identity.  Muskrat’s paintings are reminiscent of Byzantine era two dimensionality iconoclastic Christian figures, except Tera is inspired by the patron saints of trailer parks, rodeos, parking lots and local and seedy watering holes. Her versions of the Sacred Mother Mary thrust their raw sexuality and bravado in your face with the celebratory sparkle of dollar store tiaras.  Muskrat pokes fun of the Virgin-Whore complex with such confidence and clarity that her loaded compositions brilliantly highlight the dark side of the stagnant, and oppressive roles most women are squeezed into and endure. The devil is in the details in Muskrat’s paintings, as the ordinary winks at the viewer with a cheeky knowing glance.

In her collection of Cabronas y Chingonas, Muskrat explores the multifaceted triumphs and ruins of the divine feminine which is nestled within the valleys and mountains del Norte. Muskrat’s muses are fierce, and resilient but can be dangerous when provoked. New works will be presented at the exhibit which runs November 1st to December 11th, 2023 at the Wildflower Playhouse.

Opening reception will be a High Desert Tea Party from 4-6 on Saturday, November 4th.
