GREAT WOMEN COMPOSERS 2025: Florence Price and Amy Beach

Taos Soundscapes presents another in an annual series of Women's History month concerts of music by great women composers, this year featuring Florence Price and Amy Beach. Both are Americans active in the early 20th century, both were virtuosic keyboardists and among the first women to have symphonies performed by major orchestras.

Florence Price (1887-1953) was an African-American born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, a child prodigy who published music at age 12, and later a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, a music professor, and a mainstay of the Chicago music community after fleeing the increasingly violent racism of Arkansas in 1927.

Amy Beach (1867-1944) was a largely self-trained Bostonian, prolific and much-admired composer and pianist during her life, and then neglected until recently, as was Price as well.

Both composers composed lots of piano solo, chamber music and songs, which will be well represented in this program.

As with all Taos Soundscapes concerts, this one will feature refreshments at intermission and an opportunity to talk and mix with the performers and other audience members. In this case, the performers are Soundscape regulars: cellist and artistic director Rebecca Caron, violinist Ari Le, soprano Elizabeth Calvert, and pianist Claire Detels. Come join us--we always have fun!
