Kristen as Callas
Kristen Woolf, known for her many theatrical ventures in Taos (singing, acting, directing, producing), was previously a celebrated soprano with Opera Southwest in Albuquerque, singing the title roles in Tosca and Madame Butterfly, as well as Marguerite in Faust. In 1990 she wrote and performed a one-woman show: Callas: A Greek Tragedy, a dramatic musical portrayal of the life of Maria Callas (“ … rewarding and exciting right from the beginning”—Albuquerque Journal). The highly acclaimed performance was saved on a DVD and tucked away—until now!
Maria Callas created a furor as an artist and as a celebrity. She engaged and moved audiences around the world with her singing and her acting as no other performer of opera ever had. She attracted the finest stage directors and designers to the world of opera. She re-popularized the entire repertoire of bel canto singing. Within each of the tragic heroines she played on stage she found an element of her own tortured soul and she made it real for her audiences - they loved her!
