A stage reading of PIGEON SUICIDE by John C. Richards
Pigeon Suicide is a full-length play in two acts set primarily at a downtown Los Angeles bus stop, where a diverse group of people see a pigeon run over by a car. As they discuss it, they realize that it’s alive, though wounded, flopping around across the street. They debate whether to save it, or end its suffering when the driver of the car that ran it over appears. They send him to put it out of its misery, but things go horribly awry in a tragic/comic mess that ends up with him getting arrested for beating the bird to death.
Each character is changed by these events, each in their own way, including the Driver’s cellmate at jail. Pigeon Suicide is about the randomness of life. That bird stepped into the road at the exact moment that was going to lead to a ripple effect in the lives of every witness.
